Onamuji Shrine, enshrining Okuninushi (Onamuji no Mikoto) as its principal deity, is located in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Its founding is traditionally recorded in the shrine chronicles as dating to the Tenpyo era (729-749). Listed in the Engishiki as a shikinaisha, its deities are recorded in the Shoku Nihongi in connection with ancient volcanic activity off the Osumi coast. In 1871 it was designated a kensha under the modern shrine ranking system. Today it is revered as a deity of medicine and protection against snakebite.
