Yanagawa Hiyoshi Jinja is an ancient shrine situated in Yanagawa, the city of water towns. This area has prospered since ancient times as a vital hub for water transportation, and the shrine has a long history of watching over the lives of local people. The beautiful canal surroundings of Yanagawa are truly a fitting place for a water deity. The Hiyoshi deity is also known for using monkeys as divine messengers and is said to possess strong powers of warding off evil and misfortune. As a traditional shrine continuing from the era of the Yanagawa Domain, it is affectionately known as "Hiyoshi-san" by local residents. It is a wonderful shrine where one can worship with a peaceful heart amid the water town atmosphere.
