Kongōfukuji is an ancient temple serving as the 38th temple of the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temple Pilgrimage, standing at Cape Ashizurizaki, the southernmost point of Honshu. It is said to have been founded when Kōbō Daishi Kūkai perceived the manifestation of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva during his spiritual practice at this location. Known for its magnificent appearance standing on the sheer cliffs of Cape Ashizurizaki facing the fierce waves of the Pacific Ocean, this temple has long drawn the faith of those praying for maritime safety. As the concluding temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage's "place of practice," it is a spiritually efficacious sacred site where many pilgrims offer prayers of gratitude.
