History
Setsukeiji serves as the thirty-third temple of the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temple Pilgrimage and stands as a historic ancient temple within Kōchi City. It is said to have been founded by Kōbō Daishi Kūkai and was originally called "Kōfukuji." The present name "Setsukeiji" was given when the temple became the boddhisattva temple of Chōsokabe Motochika during the Sengoku period, taking its name from Motochika's posthumous Buddhist name "Setsukeiji Josho Daikoji." This temple, with its deep connections to the daimyo of Tosa, is beloved as a spiritually efficacious pilgrimage temple where Kannon Bodhisattva's compassionate power fulfills the wishes of many visitors.
