History
Saigozaki-ji is the twenty-fourth temple of the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temple Pilgrimage, an ancient Shingon Buddhist temple standing on the steep cliffs of Cape Muroto. It is said that Kobo Daishi Kukai practiced here during his youth and achieved enlightenment through the Kokuzogukumonnji practice, making it a sacred site of great spiritual power. From the grounds facing the rough waves of the Pacific Ocean, one can witness the same magnificent seascape that the Great Master beheld at the moment of his enlightenment. Drawing from the Great Master's experience of "sky and sea becoming one," many seekers and pilgrims visit this sacred place in search of peace of mind and wisdom.
