History

Byakko

Shijukusho Shrine, located in Niitomi, Kimotsuki, Kagoshima, was founded in 984 (Eikan 2) when Tomo no Kaneyuki, ancestor of the Kimotsuki clan, was appointed as Governor-General of Satsuma Province and invited deities from both the inner and outer shrines of Ise Jingu. The name Shijukusho (Forty-nine Places) derives from the total of forty-nine deities enshrined here — seven generations of heavenly deities, five generations of earthly deities, and additional divine figures. Revered as the guardian shrine of the Kimotsuki clan and the central shrine of the Osumi region, it hosts the Koyama Yabusame (mounted archery) festival, a tradition spanning nearly 900 years, designated as a prefectural intangible folk cultural property in 1981.
