History

Byakko

Soushiba Shrine, situated in Yukyuzan Park in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, is dedicated to Makino Tadatoki, the third lord of the Nagaoka Domain. When Tadatoki passed away in 1722 (Kyoho 7), the Yoshida family of Kyoto bestowed the divine name Soushiba Reijin upon him, and his successor Tadatoshi constructed a shrine within Nagaoka Castle. The shrine was later relocated to Yukyuzan. It survived the turbulence of the Boshin War and continued to be revered by the people of Nagaoka. The main hall and worship hall are designated as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties, and the shrine is counted among the Hundred Scenic Views of Echigo Nagaoka.
