Asakaiino Jinja is known as an ancient shrine connected to Nunakawa-hime of Itoigawa. Nunakawa-hime is also called the Goddess of Jade and has deep ties to this region's jade culture. The shrine name "Asakaiino" (朝飯野) means a sacred meadow where one partakes of meals at dawn, and it has been revered since ancient times as a holy place. Together with Amatsu Jinja, it protects the Ichinomiya district and has fostered the rich natural environment and culture of Itoigawa.
