History

Byakko

Hirohata Shrine in Komono, Mie, was founded on August 15, 1630, when Komono domain lord Hijikata Oouji invited the divine spirit of Emperor Ojin from Iwashimizu Hachimangu. Throughout the Edo period it was revered as Masahachiman-gu, the guardian shrine of the Komono domain. In 1871 it merged with Suwa Shrine and adopted the name Hirohata Shrine. Further mergers from 1907 incorporated surrounding shrines, resulting in the current ensemble of twenty-nine deities. The autumn festival held October 1-3 features a procession of portable shrines, decorative floats, and ceremonial music.
