Uniquely, while it belongs to the Tendai school, it is managed by the Nichiren school under a formal agreement. In February 1995, it was designated a historical site of the Nichiren school as "The Sacred Place of Mt. Hiei Yokawa Jokoin where Saint Nichiren Studied." The young Nichiren is said to have studied here on Mt. Hiei, and the site is deeply venerated by Nichiren school followers. It is currently maintained as a Nichiren school training center on Mt.
