History

Byakko

Hakodate's Itsukushima Jinja was invited from the Itsukushima Jinja of the Seto Inland Sea. Befitting Hakodate's seaside location, it enshrines Ichikishimahime no Mikoto, the goddess of the sea. As evidenced by the place name Bentenmachi, it has also been cherished as Benzaiten and has been revered by many as a deity of performing arts and financial fortune. Its location overlooking Hakodate Harbor has been a spiritual support for those who work at sea and in commerce. As a deity who loves beautiful music and the arts, it receives special devotion from those engaged in cultural activities.
