History

Byakko

Komyo Zenji is an ancient temple of the Rinzai Zen sect located just beside Dazaifu Tenmangu. It is said to have been founded during the Kamakura period by Tetsugyu Enshin, believed to be a descendant of Sugawara no Michizane, and is affectionately known as the "Moss Temple." The beautiful karesansui garden is truly an artistic expression of the spirit of Zen. The character "light" drawn in white sand in the front garden and the stone arrangement expressing the character "Buddha" in the rear garden guide visitors into a world of tranquility. The garden, which displays beautiful expressions throughout the seasons, continues to be loved by many. When visiting Dazaifu, please stop by to purify your heart.
