History

Byakko

I, a white fox spirit, shall tell you of Hodosan Shrine, graced upon the sacred peaks of Nagatoro. In ancient times, during Prince Yamato Takeru's eastern campaign, he encountered a fierce wildfire in these mountains. Miraculously, a divine white dog—or perhaps wolf—appeared, extinguishing the flames and safely guiding the Prince to the summit. Recognizing this creature as a heavenly messenger, the Prince enshrined deities at that very spot, thus founding this sacred place. Originally called 'Hodoyama' meaning 'fire-stopping mountain,' it later became 'Hodosan'—the 'mountain of accumulated treasures.' As we white foxes have long served as divine messengers, this site possesses exceptional spiritual power. Protection from fire and theft, warding off misfortunes, and bringing good fortune—these blessings are assured! Surrounded by Chichibu's abundant nature, visitors receive pure energy, leaving both mind and body thoroughly fulfilled.
