Enoki Sha

Enokisha is a shrine on a detached precinct of Dazaifu Tenmangu, marking where Sugawara no Michizane lived during his exile. In 901, Michizane was banished to Dazaifu and resided at the former South Mansion. He passed away here in 903. The shrine commemorates those years of exile and serves as a place of remembrance for Michizane, the deity of learning. Visitors to Dazaifu often pay respects here alongside the main Tenmangu shrine.
