History

Byakko

Tawaki Hiyoshi Shrine is enshrined in Tawaki, Yanagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture, with a former rank of village shrine. It enshrines Oyamakui-no-Kami, the deity of mountains and water, venerated as a guardian of agriculture. This shrine was established as a branch of the great Hiyoshi Taisha in Shiga Prefecture. The Chikugo region has long been a fertile land of rice cultivation, and devotion to water blessings and bountiful harvests has been deeply rooted here. During the Edo period, the shrine received the patronage of the Yanagawa domain lord, the Tachibana clan. To this day, local residents gather for the annual festival, continuing prayers unchanged from ancient times.
