History

Byakko

Known by the temple title Anyo-zan Gokuraku-in, this Jodo-shu temple was founded in 1199 (Shoji 1). Both its mountain name and sub-temple title express aspirations toward the Pure Land. The principal image is a four-shaku Amida Nyorai enshrined with attendant figures of Kannon and Seishi. Within the grounds lies Muho-ike, one of the Seven Ponds of Zenkoji, preserving the atmosphere of antiquity in tranquil stillness. The main hall, built in 1787 (Tenmei 7), stands as one of the oldest surviving large structures in Nagano town after the Zenkoji Earthquake, a testament to the craftsmanship of its era.
