History

Byakko

Daioiji Temple, located in Mizuko, Fujimi City, Saitama Prefecture, was founded by the revered priest Kobo Daishi Kukai during the early Heian period. According to temple legend, Kukai visited this area during his travels through the eastern provinces and heard of a mysterious pond where water glowed with light. When Kukai performed rituals at the pond, the water droplets shone to form a mandala, from which Dainichi Nyorai and Fudo Myo-o appeared. Kukai declared this to be a sacred site of divine manifestation and founded the temple. The name Daioiji derives from this founding legend. Historical records from the Edo period confirm the temple existed during the Tensho era (1532-1555). Today, Fudo Myo-o remains enshrined as the principal deity.
