History

Byakko

Motoori Norinaga-no-Miya is a shrine located in the Yohio-no-Mori grove near the ruins of Matsusaka Castle in Mie Prefecture. It enshrines the Edo-period kokugaku scholar Motoori Norinaga as a deity of learning, with Hirata Atsutane enshrined alongside him. Veneration of Norinaga grew from the late Edo period, and in 1871 Kawaguchi Tsunefumi and others built a small shrine beside Norinaga grave at Mt. Yamamuro. The shrine was formally established in 1875 as Yamamuro-san Jinja. Designated a prefectural shrine in 1903, it relocated to its current site in 1915 and was renamed Motoori Norinaga-no-Miya in 1995.
