The beautiful-sounding place name Benkabetsu is thought to derive from the Ainu language and reflects the rich natural beauty of this land. It was likely established alongside Tobetsu-cho's development as a spiritual support for the people residing in this region. In a serene environment surrounded by nature, it has been cherished as the guardian deity of the community.
