History

Byakko

Chikuzen Kokubunji is a Koyasan Shingon Buddhist temple in Dazaifu, Fukuoka, and the successor to the ancient provincial temple of Chikuzen Province, founded by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu during the Nara period. Its mountain name is Ryutokosan, and the principal object of worship is Yakushi Nyorai. Within the temple grounds lie the ruins of the original Chikuzen Kokubunji and the Kokubu Roof Tile Kiln Site, both designated as national historic sites. The sacred flame passed down from the Nara period continues to burn today, drawing the faithful from across the region.
