Kongōchōji stands as the twenty-sixth temple of the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temple Pilgrimage on a highland overlooking the majestic Pacific Ocean at Cape Muroto. It is said that the temple received its name "Kongōchōji" when Kōbō Daishi Kūkai practiced asceticism at this location and attained the teachings of the Diamond Realm. Surrounded by the intense sounds of waves and wind at Muroto, this ancient temple has long been revered as a sacred site where the great master attained enlightenment, drawing the faith of practitioners and pilgrims. From the temple grounds, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the beautiful Cape Muroto landscape, and it serves as a spiritually efficacious pilgrimage temple that purifies the hearts of visitors.
