History
This shrine was established through the faith of two originally separate shrines. Tokuou Inari Shrine traces its origins to 1507, when Inari Okami was enshrined on a rocky hill in Inakuma by the wish of Imagawa Ujichika. In 1893, it was relocated to the current area and renamed Tokuou Inari Shrine, and in 1920 it was listed as a village shrine. Kotohira Shrine was founded around 1215 and enshrined Kotohira Okami in 1813. Both shrines were completely destroyed in the Okazaki air raid on July 20, 1945. In 1967, the two shrines were merged and a new hall was built on the former Kotohira grounds. Wisteria roots that survived the bombing grew into magnificent vines exceeding 170 centimeters, and today a wisteria festival is held here, celebrated as the finest long wisteria along the Tokaido.
