Okushi Shrine is located within the Oisonomori forest, a nationally designated historic site, in Higashioisono, Azuchi-cho, Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture. It is listed as a Shikinaisha (shrine recorded in the Engishiki) and was ranked as a prefectural shrine under the modern shrine ranking system. The principal deities are Okitsuhiko no Mikoto and Okitsuhime no Mikoto, gods of the hearth and fire, who have been venerated since ancient times. The shrine is recorded in the Engi-shiki Jinmyocho of the Heian period as "Okushi Shrine, Gamo District, Omi Province," attesting to its long-standing prestige. Situated along the old Nakasendo highway, the shrine has been revered by countless travelers throughout history.
