Gyokukeiji is an ancient temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect located in Shigaraki-cho Chokuji, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, formally named Akibazan Jurinin Gyokukeiji. It is said to have been founded by the monk Gyoki during the Tenpyo era of the Nara period as a prayer temple for national peace established by imperial decree. The principal object of worship is Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of healing, who has been venerated since ancient times for blessings of recovery from illness and longevity. Nestled in the rich natural surroundings of Shigaraki, the temple continues to be cherished as a spiritual sanctuary for the local community.
