History

Byakko

Horakuji is a Buddhist temple of the Shingon-shu Chisan sect located in the mountains of Otoyocho, Kochi Prefecture. Its mountain name is Ota-zan, and it is formally known as Otazan Daigan-in Horakuji. The principal image, Yakushi Nyorai, is affectionately called the Shibagiri Yakushi and is counted among the Three Great Yakushi of Japan. The temple's Yakushi-do hall is designated a National Treasure, preserving Heian-period architectural styles to this day. Long revered by pilgrims seeking recovery from illness, the temple continues to uphold its sacred traditions within its serene mountain setting.
