History

Byakko

Hōrakuji is an ancient temple nestled in the mountains of Ōtoyō Town, said to have been founded in the early Heian period. Inheriting the teachings of Kōbō Daishi Kūkai, it developed as a training monastery within a deeply silent mountain environment. Of particular note is the seated statue of Yakushi Nyorai created in the late Heian period, a precious Buddhist image designated as a National Important Cultural Property. This Yakushi Nyorai is known for its benefits in healing illness and has been revered since ancient times as a spiritually efficacious Buddha who soothes the physical pain and mental suffering of many people. It is a sacred place where both body and mind are purified in the tranquil mountain air.
