History

Byakko

Date Jinja in Date City is a venerable shrine bearing the lineage of the Sendai daimyo Date clan! After the Meiji Restoration, Date Kuninari and his retainers migrated to Hokkaido and began development anew, with which this shrine is deeply connected. It is said to have been founded when people who moved from Sendai invited their homeland's tutelary deity, and as a shrine inheriting the pioneering spirit and the pride of the samurai, it has taken root in the community. Together with the spirit of the Date clan's family crest of bamboo and sparrows, this shrine conveys the aspirations of pioneers to the present day. It is one of the important historical witnesses when discussing Hokkaido's development history.
