History

Byakko

Suwa Jinja in Chizu Town was founded in 1278 (Koan 1) during the Kamakura period, when a divine spirit was invited from Suwa Taisha in Shinano Province (present-day Nagano). Enshrining Takeminakata no Kami, god of valor and pioneering, it has long protected this land. During the Edo period, it flourished as a place of prayer for the Ikeda clan, lords of the Tottori domain. Nestled at the foot of Mt. Usunuya, with its approach road connecting to the historic Chizu highway, the precincts are home to hundreds of maple trees that have been the shrine's family crest motif since ancient times. In autumn, the brilliant foliage draws many visitors to this sacred mountain setting.
