History

Byakko

Asakura Jinja is an ancient shikinaisha (shrine listed in the Engishiki) and the Second Grand Shrine of Tosa Province, located in Kochi City. Its two enshrined deities are Amatsuhahagami, the pioneering deity of the Asakura area, and Emperor Saimei. The mountain behind the shrine, Akaoiyama, has been revered since antiquity as a divine dwelling. The Tosa domain lord Yamauchi clan held the shrine in deep esteem; in 1657, the second domain lord Yamauchi Tadayoshi rebuilt the main hall, which is designated a National Important Cultural Property for its ornate coloring retaining Azuchi-Momoyama architectural style.
